Products with different filling materials and outer mattress protector behave differently when used, washed and dried.
The manufacturer tries to familiarize the buyer with the instructions for caring for the mattress topper in order to extend its service life. But if you do not have instructions, and the label with recommendations is lost or has become unreadable, use the following general recommendations, focusing on the type of fabric and filler of your product.
Mattress topper is a mattress protector with protective and corrective functions for the bed.
Type And Fabric Of The Mattress Topper – Guidelines For Cleaning And Washing
If your accessory is made without filler and is just a protective cover-sheet with an elastic band or zipper, then you need to know the type of its fabric.
The most popular materials for covers are cotton knitwear or jacquard, microfiber, bamboo:
- The microfiber mattress protector is the most durable, machine washable at 60, snag-resistant.
- A cover made of cotton knitted fabric or jacquard is durable, but prone to shrinkage after washing, so the water temperature should not be more than 40 degrees.
- A bamboo cover is even more durable, but whimsical: wash only in cool water without bleach, it is forbidden to tumble dry and iron.
Washing the mattress topper is necessary every three to six months, and a little more often the product is vacuumed or knocked out by hand.
Waterproof Mattress Toppers (Moisture-Proof)
Fabric with a membrane is a miracle of technology that requires careful care. A moisture-resistant membrane does not allow moisture, dust, bacteria to pass through, but is prone to become dirty by analogy with human skin with pores. It is necessary to wash fabrics from membrane covers more often, because their structure, although it has water-repellent and breathable abilities, is designed to absorb dirt.
Washing a mattress topper made of membrane fabric is allowed at a temperature not exceeding 30 degrees without powdered products. Machine wash in a delicate cycle with a spin not exceeding 800 revolutions is allowed. Hand washing using mild liquid detergents without bleach and softeners is best. Stains are removed with ordinary laundry soap. Do not iron, as well as lay out on the radiator.
Importantly! In order to avoid loss of properties, mechanical damage to the membrane layer or its prolonged drying out under direct sunlight should not be allowed.
Protective Mattress Toppers, Quilted With Synthetic Fibre
Artificial down or polyester fibers tolerate washing well and do not knock off. Mattress toppers need to be washed at 30 degrees, gentle machine washing is acceptable, but refuse bleach. To dry, it is necessary to gently squeeze out the water (in the case of using a washing machine, do not exceed 800 revolutions) and spread out in a flattened form, but not in the open sun.
Caring For A Wool Mattress Protector or Topper
If the mattress protector is made on the principle of wool outward, it is forbidden to wash it, only dry cleaning. Lanolin from sheep’s wool improves muscle tone and the condition of the joints of the body, and also prevents dirt molecules from penetrating deep into the mattress topper. When a small stain appears, the surface is treated with foam obtained by diluting wool cleaner with slightly warm water. If the mattress topper is stained significantly, it is best to use dry cleaning. For products that are quilted on the wool under the fabric, in most cases, hand washing at 30 degrees without spinning, drying flattened on a flat surface is acceptable. Do not use an iron.
Eco-friendly camel wool is suitable even for allergy sufferers, and the mattress protector made of it is easy to ventilate, so every six months it must be taken out to the balcony. Wash in cool water or a special wash mode for wool, choosing gels with lanolin in the composition. Dry only when unfolded.
Cleaning Of Orthopedic Products
Accessories for correcting the hardness of the bed, otherwise – orthopedic mattress protectors, have a voluminous filler inside, which cannot be washed, only an external mattress protector, if the design allows it to be removed. For mattress toppers made of dense natural latex or polyurethane foam, in forced cases, it is permissible to remove stains from the surface with a soapy solution, partial or even complete hardening in warm water, without twisting. However, the process of water draining and complete drying will take from one to several days, depending on the thickness.
Importantly! In case of using other materials, moisture should not be allowed to get inside the product.
General Rules For Caring For Mattress Toppers
The manufacturer attaches a label to the product with a reminder of the rules of care. Do not exceed the washing temperature specified for the material. If the filler has fallen slightly during use, then it must be straightened before washing. Mattress protectors do not need to be washed too often, like bedding. Once a month, they must be ventilated, and once a week they must be vacuumed with a special nozzle for furniture with a soft pile (not to be confused with a carpet brush, whose coarse bristles can leave snags on knitted or terry fabric).
