The spring system is the most important parameter when choosing a spring mattress. Orthopedic qualities, anatomical, comfort, and durability of the product depend on it. Blocks are divided into two types: dependent and independent. How they differ from each other, their advantages and disadvantages, which design is preferable – read in our article. And then you will have no doubts about which spring mattress is better to choose: with independent or dependent springs!
What’s Inside A Spring Mattress
What A Standard Spring Mattress Looks Like In A Cut:
1. Spring block. Springs are the most important element of the structure. He takes on the entire load. The more advanced the unit in the model, the better it adapts, and the more weight it can support.
2. Insulating layer. It is used to protect fillers from contact with springs. Most often it is spun bond or felt. Layers of material are located on both sides of the block.
3. Fillers. On top of the insulating layer, there are fillers with different properties. Rigid materials increase orthopedics, better distribute the weight of the body on the springs, and soft materials adapt to bends. The higher the layer of filling, the more comfortable the mattress.
4. Case. The mattress is protected from dirt and abrasion by a cover that completely covers the structure. There are models with puffy stitching for greater comfort.
5. PU foam box. It is necessary to give rigidity to the structure, and so that you can sit on the edge of the product without the risk of hitting the sides of the bed.
Types Of Springs
All spring mattresses are divided into two categories by design: dependent and independent.
Dependent Spring Block
This is the well-known Bonnel block, which consists of cone-shaped springs from 108 to 120 pieces per square meter, which are mechanically connected to each other. The block is made of durable steel. The photos clearly show that the elements are related to each other:
Pros
- Inexpensive. A good option for a cottage, guest or rented apartment.
- There is a reinforced block, complemented by polyurethane foam columns. It can withstand up to 150 kg (standard unit for 90-120 kg).
Cons
- Not suitable for couples due to the effect of the wave and hammock: the movements of one partner cause vibrations over the entire area of the mattress, interfering with the sleep of the other. With the hammock effect, the mattress is pushed under the heavier partner, and the second one begins to roll in his direction, which also disrupts comfortable sleep.
- It does not create an anatomical surface due to the dependent structure of the springs: when pressed, one compresses the adjacent ones, which is why the mattress does not follow the contours of the body, especially with a thin top layer.
Independent Spring Unit
This is a modern design. It consists of individual springs that are not connected to each other. Each is packed in a spunbond case. Dense non-woven fabric protects the springs and fixes them, allowing the elements to shrink only in the vertical plane. The work of the product with independent springs is based on the principle of aligning the body due to the possibility of a different level of compression of the springs under each area. This improves the orthopedic and anatomical characteristics of the block and makes it more durable.
Independent springs instantly adapt to changing position during rest, perfectly support the body, including the S-curve of the spine. That’s why it’s so comfortable to sleep on them.
Despite the chosen position, a mattress based on independent springs creates the right support for the spine – it remains straight.
- Pros
Point Support: Only the springs are compressed under weight, not the adjacent ones, providing comfort and a healthy rest. - Ideal for couples: it does not transmit vibrations from the movements of the neighbor. You can toss and turn in your sleep as much as you want and not worry that your loved one will not sleep well.
- Zonal mattresses provide improved support through reinforced zones (thickened wire) for high-stress areas like the hips and shoulders. Suitable for people with a lot of weight.
- Cons
High price of more advanced spring blocks starting from the 50k+. You have to pay for comfort. - Careful handling. They should not be used as a trampoline or overloaded. Even if one spring flies out, you will have to forget about a comfortable sleep.
